Shika’s educational sponsorship programme is starting to show real results

Class of 2012: All Shika's primary school graduates win a place at secondary school

All 11 Shika sponsored orphan and vulnerable children who sat their National Examinations in 2012 did so well that they managed to secure secondary school places in 2013.  It was not only the children’s hard work but ongoing support from their committed sponsors that ensured these children are well on the road to bucking the cycle of poverty which has plagued their families until now.  While a secondary education is vital for children hoping to leave school with the prospect of a career or employment, only 25% of children in Tanzania go to secondary school.  Poor and vulnerable children are least likely to be part of this figure.  Thanks so all the sponsors and well done all the students for working so hard for a better future for yourselves and your families!

Shika founder Michelle Parlett is leading a team of 7 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in February. The team comprising of Anna Chard, Dr David Steel, Chris Evans, Silje Einerkjear, and Neal Granville will start their ascent on February 2nd. Fingers crossed having summited they will return from the mountain on February 8th.  The team are putting themselves through sub zero temperatures, hikes of up to 15 hours a day and long spells of altitude sickness to raise £10,000, enough to fund our vital after school programme to a whole year.

The team will visit the Shika programme on Friday 1st February prior to the climb in order to meet the children that their climb will support.  Keep checking in to view their progress.  If you would like sponsor the team please do so here
